One of my favorite benefits of Hyatt’s loyalty program is the ability to earn and redeem Suite Upgrade Awards. These have scored me some great suites in the past. Unfortunately, some properties are starting to restrict usage and World of Hyatt® members now have two more to add to the growing list of hotels where Suite Upgrade Awards can no longer be used.
Hyatt has quietly updated its list of Suite Award Ineligible Properties, adding Alila Napa Valley and Grand Hyatt Grand Cayman to the exclusion list. The change means members will not be able to use one of Hyatt’s most valuable elite benefits to confirm a suite at either property.
Suite Upgrade Awards allow eligible World of Hyatt® members to confirm a standard suite at the time of booking for stays of up to seven nights on both paid and award reservations (provided a standard suite is available). The awards are earned through Hyatt’s Milestone Rewards program (beginning after 40 qualifying nights).
While the benefit remains one of the strongest perks among hotel loyalty programs, Hyatt’s exclusion list has steadily grown over the years. It now includes dozens of individual hotels across brands such as Park Hyatt, Andaz, Alila, Thompson, Hyatt Centric, Hyatt Regency, and several all-inclusive resorts. Entire brands (including Hyatt Place, Hyatt Studios, Caption by Hyatt, and most Destination by Hyatt Residences) are also excluded.

Members still have other ways to secure a suite, including redeeming points for suite awards or using points to upgrade eligible paid stays. However, those options are also subject to availability. For frequent Hyatt guests, the expanding list of excluded hotels is becoming increasingly noticeable. Many of the brand’s most desirable luxury properties are now ineligible for Suite Upgrade Awards, limiting where members can use one of the program’s most coveted benefits.
Anthony’s Take: As Hyatt continues to grow its portfolio, loyal guests will likely be watching closely to see whether the list of eligible hotels expands or continues to shrink.
