Marriott is bringing the Ritz-Carlton Reserve brand to a major city for the first time and announced plans today to open an ultra-luxury property in Shanghai in 2030.

The hotel will be located in the city’s rapidly developing North Bund district as part of a 1,575-foot tall, mixed-use tower that will feature offices, residences, retail space, and an observation deck. Unlike traditional Ritz-Carlton Reserve properties, which are typically found in secluded destinations, the Shanghai hotel will introduce a new urban Reserve concept designed for major global cities. The property will feature approximately 110 guestrooms and suites (many with views of the Bund and the Huangpu River) along with multiple restaurants, a signature bar, spa, fitness center, and indoor swimming pool.

Marriott says the project is intended to deliver the same highly personalized service and exclusive atmosphere associated with the Reserve brand while offering guests a tranquil retreat within one of the world’s busiest metropolitan areas.

The opening will also make Shanghai the only city in the world to host all eight of Marriott International’s luxury hotel brands to further strengthen the company’s presence in China’s growing luxury travel market.

Tina Edmundson, President of Luxury at Marriott International, said:

Ritz-Carlton Reserve has always been about creating rare, deeply personal experiences that could only exist in their destination. There is an intimacy to Reserve – an extraordinary level of personalization, a deep connection to local culture, and a sense of discovery and wellbeing that allows guests to experience a place in an entirely different way. Bringing that philosophy to Shanghai for our first urban Reserve is an incredibly exciting evolution for the brand. Shanghai is a city unlike any other, where extraordinary heritage and culture exist alongside incredible creativity, energy and global influence. We see a remarkable opportunity to create a true sanctuary within that energy – one that feels unmistakably of Shanghai, while offering the highly bespoke, transformative experiences that make Reserve so special.”

Anthony’s Take: I’ve always thought of this brand as a high-end spot for beach vacations or secluded tropical getaways. I guess that’s not true anymore.
