Five passengers were reportedly burned after a laptop caught fire aboard an American Airlines flight from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

The incident occurred on American Airlines flight AA 2398, which was carrying more than 130 passengers. According to air traffic control communications, the flight crew alerted controllers to a fire in the rear of the cabin while the aircraft was approaching Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).

According to the BBC, flight attendants quickly responded and worked to extinguish the flames. They managed to contain the damaged laptop before the aircraft landed safely. The pilot later reported that the device had been secured, although four to five passengers had sustained burns during the incident. Emergency responders met the aircraft upon arrival at the gate in Dallas. One passenger received medical treatment at the airport and was later released.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is expected to investigate the incident. Lithium-ion batteries, which power most laptops and other portable electronics, can overheat or catch fire if damaged, improperly charged, or exposed to other conditions. The FAA has recorded dozens of battery-related smoke and fire incidents aboard aircraft this year, with laptops among the most common devices involved.

American Airlines released the following statement:

American Airlines flight 2398 landed safely at DFW after reports of smoke from a customer’s device during landing. We thank our crew for their professionalism and swift response to quickly contain the device.”

Anthony’s Take: American Airlines confirmed that smoke originated from a customer’s electronic device during the flight’s landing phase and praised the crew for their swift response in preventing the situation from escalating. Thankfully, this was not more serious and the aircraft arrived safely.
