Lufthansa is expanding its onboard dining options this fall with the introduction of new hot meals for Economy Class travelers on short- and medium-haul routes while also enhancing meal selection for long-haul Business Class passengers.

Beginning September 1st, Economy Class passengers flying on eligible European flights lasting at least two hours will be able to pre-order one of five hot entrees through the airline’s Onboard Delights program. The new menu includes beef roulade with potato dumplings, chicken teriyaki, tortellini with tomato sauce and zucchini, a traditional German currywurst, and a cheeseburger. Depending on the meal selected, orders will also include either a dessert or a bread roll.

The hot meals are available exclusively through advance ordering with reservations accepted from four weeks up to 24 hours before departure. It’s interesting to see this in Economy when other airlines are still working on rolling this out in premium cabins.

Lufthansa is also expanding its pre-order dining service for Business Class travelers. Starting in September, passengers on most long-haul flights returning to Germany will be able to choose from six main course options (doubling the previous selection of three). The expanded service follows the successful rollout of advance meal selection on outbound long-haul flights from Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich International Airport (MUC).

Olaf Mauthe, Head of Hospitality Catering Management at Lufthansa, said:

With these hot meals, we’re expanding Onboard Delights to offer our passengers on longer continental flights an additional selection. Pre-ordering guarantees our guests that their desired meal will be waiting for them on board – for a relaxed and predictable journey.”

Anthony’s Take: The enhancements are part of Lufthansa’s continued effort to give passengers more choice and a more personalized onboard dining experience. It’s rare that the back of the plane gets much love, but Lufthansa has been trying to make the experience better in Economy. It recently announced amenity kits will also be coming to Economy.
