I first wrote about EVA Air’s plans to fly nonstop between Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) back in February. The 4x weekly flights have now started and mark the first nonstop route to the US capital operated by a Taiwanese passenger airline. The move expands EVA Air’s presence in North America and addresses a long-standing gap in nonstop connectivity (and a nice win for passengers connecting through one of United’s East Coast hubs).

These flights will use Boeing 787-9 aircraft with 26 in Royal Laurel Class (Business Class), 28 Premium Economy, and 224 Economy Class seats. The addition brings EVA Air’s North American network to 10 destinations and 98 weekly flights. At 7,864 miles, the flight ranks among EVA Air’s longest (just shy of its Houston flights to George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), but expected to face longer flying times due to routing constraints). Other EVA Air flights in North America include:

  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
  • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW)
  • Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR)

EVA Air IAD

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) celebrated the inaugural flight from Taipei yesterday with a ceremonial water cannon salute and a welcome ceremony on the tarmac. MWAA President and CEO Jack Potter greeted EVA Air President Clay Sun and arriving passengers while the festivities included a traditional dragon and lion dance and an exchange of commemorative gifts. Sun presented a model Boeing 787-9 and Potter gifted a framed map of Washington, DC to symbolize the new route. Passengers also received limited-edition souvenirs from EVA Air and the Taiwan Tourism Administration.

Anthony’s Take: It’s great to see EVA Air continue expanding. This route makes sense for EVA Air given its Star Alliance membership and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) being a United hub. EVA Air has beaten out its Taiwanese competitors: China Airlines and STARLUX Airlines with this addition.
