Back in January, I wrote about American Airlines adding Dallas-based restaurant Pecan Lodge’s authentic Central Texas-style barbecue to select flights beginning in February. Now, the airline is giving more First Class passengers the opportunity to enjoy one of Texas’ most celebrated barbecue restaurants in the sky as it adds routes where the dishes will be served.

Beginning September 9th, American will expand its partnership to make the restaurant’s signature barbecue dishes available for preorder on all eligible domestic flights departing Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). Customers traveling in First Class will be able to choose between a smoked brisket sandwich for lunch or a Texas-style barbecue platter for dinner (depending on the time of their flight and menu availability).

The onboard meals begin long before departure. The meats are prepared at Pecan Lodge’s Dallas restaurant using the same slow-smoking techniques that have made it one of the nation’s best-known barbecue destinations. After cooking, the food is packaged and delivered to American’s catering partners, who prepare the meals for inflight service while preserving the restaurant’s signature flavors.

Pecan Lodge has built a national reputation for its Central Texas-style barbecue and earned recognition from numerous food and travel publications over the years.

The barbecue expansion is just one of several recent enhancements to American’s onboard dining program. The airline has also upgraded its premium beverage offerings with an expanded champagne selection, introduced new California wines in premium cabins, added Lavazza coffee across its mainline fleet, and increased the variety of snacks available for purchase in the Main Cabin.

American’s SVP of Customer Experience Design and Strategy, Rhonda Crawford, said:

Customer feedback on the Pecan Lodge menu offering has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to expand this offering across flights from our hometown hub. Pecan Lodge’s bold Texas flavors translate exceptionally well at altitude, making it a great choice for customers looking to enjoy a memorable dining experience in the air.”

Anthony’s Take: With the expanded partnership, travelers departing Dallas can now enjoy an authentic taste of Texas barbecue before their wheels ever touch the ground. I hope to try this soon.
