A confrontation between two foreign travelers at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) escalated into a physical altercation that resulted in both men being detained by airport police and referred to prosecutors. The incident occurred on August 6th in the domestic departure area while both passengers were waiting to board separate flights to Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB).
The Manila Bulletin reports that according to investigators, the dispute began after Kent Scott Lee (a 54-year-old American traveler) allegedly directed anti-Semitic remarks toward Noam Shimon Rosenberg (a 37-year-old Israeli passenger). Rosenberg told authorities he heard Lee make comments insulting his Jewish faith, including praising Adolf Hitler and expressing regret that more Jews had not been killed during the Holocaust. Authorities said the remarks sparked a confrontation that quickly turned physical.
Investigators allege Rosenberg responded by kicking Lee’s luggage cart and striking him with the struggle also causing damage to a marble table near a food concession inside the terminal. Lee disputed that account, telling investigators that Rosenberg initiated the attack after interrupting what he described as a private conversation.
Airport Police Department officers intervened within moments and separated the two men before taking them into custody. Both passengers were transported to Pasay General Hospital for medical evaluations with reports indicating Lee requested additional X-ray examinations.
The following day, authorities referred the case to the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office. Both men faced potential charges on allegations of alarms and scandals, which is an offense under the Philippines’ Revised Penal Code that addresses conduct causing public disorder. The incident temporarily disrupted activity in the departure area but did not affect airport operations.
Anthony’s Take: Airport authorities have not released additional details regarding the outcome of the prosecutor’s review or whether either passenger will face additional charges. What a horrible thing to say and while getting physical did nothing to remedy this situation, I can’t blame Rosenberg for being deeply offended.
