A few days ago, I wrote about how United Airlines was giving reservation agents an unusual amount of flexibility following the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) to President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT) and instructing them that passengers may make changes to itineraries if they object to traveling to the airport. This didn’t sound like it was going to last long and it hasn’t.

United has now clarified that it will not allow passengers to switch airports for free simply because they don’t want to fly to the newly renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT) in West Palm Beach.  The clarification comes after an internal memo, first reported by Live and Let’s Fly, instructed reservation agents that they could offer customers alternative flights to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) or Miami International Airport (MIA) if they no longer wished to fly to the renamed airport. The memo suggested agents could make the changes without manager approval, which led many to believe United had created a special exception. After the memo quickly went viral, United said the guidance was “poorly worded and not accurate.”

The airline emphasized that while most domestic United tickets (excluding Basic Economy) can still be changed without a change fee, passengers must pay any applicable fare difference. United said its policy does not permit free changes solely because of an airport’s name or three-letter code.

Anthony’s Take: The airport, formerly known as Palm Beach International Airport (PBI), was officially renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport (DJT) on July 9th following approval by Florida lawmakers and Palm Beach County officials. The renaming has generated significant public debate, but United says it has no special policy allowing travelers to avoid the airport at no additional cost. I was surprised when I initially heard this given how much sucking up the airline has done to the current administration. I just hope whoever wrote the memo doesn’t end up punished or fired for it.
