An attempt to catch a missed flight turned into a serious airport security incident after two passengers ran after an aircraft at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) and approached an Aeroflot aircraft that was preparing to depart.
The incident occurred on July 25th after boarding for a flight to Ufa International Airport (UFA) had already closed. According to reports, the aircraft had been connected to a tow vehicle and was preparing to push back when the two passengers entered the restricted apron area. One of the women was pulling a suitcase as they headed toward the aircraft.
Ground crews immediately halted the towing operation while airport personnel and police officers quickly intercepted the pair before they reached the airplane. They were escorted away from the restricted area without further incident.
Although no injuries were reported, the event temporarily interrupted aircraft operations and raised questions about how the passengers were able to gain access to the secure airside area after missing their flight. Airport aprons are among the most tightly controlled areas of any airport because of the hazards posed by moving aircraft, service vehicles, towing operations, and jet engines. Even when an aircraft’s engines are not running, tow vehicles and other ground equipment create significant safety risks for unauthorized individuals.
Anthony’s Take: While travelers occasionally arrive at the gate moments after boarding has closed, these two are pretty dumb thinking that they would ever be allowed on the flight.
