United Airlines just announced its largest-ever expansion with tons of new routes and cities coming in 2027. Now, American Airlines is set to make its own announcement and released some teaser images in the form of a menu today on its social media channels. While we’ll need to wait until tomorrow for confirmation, it looks like American is making some nice additions (including a few possible cities that United Airlines does not serve).
The menu has clues hidden throughout. Eagle-eyed commenters seem to have made some smart observations about the potential routes. These could include:
- Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO): The hamburger description has the IATA code for the airport.
- Vienna Airport (VIE): The menu has the letters YLHQQD. If you roll those back three in the alphabet, you spell Vienna.
- Hamburg Airport (HAM): There is a hamburger on the menu.
- Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL): Smoked fish soup leads to the Finnish city.
- Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE): Provençal says this city in the South of France.
- Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG): Not a new destination, but possibly a new route from another American hub. The Eiffel Tower is 1,083-feet tall. United just added flights from Denver International Airport (DEN).
- Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO): This has already been reported and would be flown with the Airbus A321XLR. The first letters in Pristine Octopus Ravioli with Truffle Oreganata spell Porto.
- Keflavík International Airport (KEF): Flights from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) could resume to Reykjavík. American last flew this route in 2019.
There are lots of other guesses, but these feel like they could be correct. How many new routes and where they will fly to/from will be determined tomorrow.
Anthony’s Take: I love that there are going to be even more options to get to Europe and South America next year. American needs to continue beefing up its map and these could be some solid additions.
