Yesterday, I wrote about American Airlines teasing the routes that it was planning to launch. There were all sorts of guesses across social media and now we know where the airline is headed next with seven new routes and service to three new destinations while also increasing flights on several popular long-haul markets.
Tickets for the new routes will go on sale August 31st with daily service planned on all of the airline’s new summer routes. Among the biggest additions are three new destinations from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), including:
- Keflavík International Airport (KEF) (this returns after not being served since 2019) (starts on May 27th)
- Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) (starts on March 28th)
- Vienna Airport (VIE) (starts on May 6th)
The airline will also launch several other new international routes, including:
- Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) (starts on May 27th)
- Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) (starts on March 19th). I previously covered this in July.
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) (starts on March 28th)
- New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport (NCE) (starts on May 6th)
In addition, American will introduce a fourth daily flight between New York John F.Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and London Heathrow Airport (LHR) beginning March 28th. This will be operated with the airline’s Boeing 787-9 that features Flagship Suite® seats. The added frequency strengthens its transatlantic partnership with British Airways and offers up to 14 xdaily flights between New York and London.
Several of the new European routes, including Amsterdam, Nice, Porto, and Vienna, will be flown with the airline’s new Airbus A321XLR. This allows American to serve long-haul destinations with a premium narrowbody aircraft.
American is also extending the seasonal operation of flights from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) and from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) with both routes beginning earlier in the spring travel season on March 4th.
American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning, Brian Znotins, said:

Our international network has expanded to offer destinations to satisfy every travel palate. Combined with our investments enhancing our onboard product and inflight experience, travelers have more reasons to choose American when they fly around the world.”
Anthony’s Take: With the expansion, American continues to invest in its long-haul network while increasing premium travel options to Europe and Asia. The airline will also become the only US carrier offering nonstop service to Vienna and further expands its Central European footprint. While not as exciting as United’s additions, these are smart choices for American.
