British Airways is marking 80 years of transatlantic service this July by celebrating the anniversary of its first flight between London and New York in 1946 (a route that helped establish one of the world’s largest transatlantic networks).

Today, the airline serves 27 destinations across the United States and will operate more than 20,500 flights to and from the US during the summer season, which makes it the European carrier with the most flights to the country.

Along with this milestone, British Airways also announced significant investments in its airport lounges. The airline will spend $15 million to completely redevelop its lounge at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The redesigned space set to feature upgraded dining, a new full-service bar, an enhanced Concorde dining area, refreshed shower facilities, and runway views. The new lounge is expected to reopen in 2027.

Additional lounge upgrades are also planned for Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in 2027.

Sean Doyle, British Airways Chairman and CEO, said:

Reaching 80 years of flying to the United States is a truly proud moment for British Airways. From our very first flight between London and New York to the comprehensive network we operate today, our commitment to connecting people, cultures and commerce across the Atlantic has never been stronger. This year is especially significant as the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary and plays host to a global football spectacle. We are proud to be bringing fans and travelers together for these historic moments, while continuing to invest in our customer experience to shape the future of transatlantic travel.”

Anthony’s Take: The anniversary comes as British Airways continues a broader modernization effort that includes introducing Starlink high-speed Wi-Fi, improving operational performance, and unveiling a redesigned First Class cabin as part of its multi-billion-dollar investment in the customer experience.

Given how BA has been seriously cheapening pretty much everything ever since Walsh do you truly think that we will see much in actual improvements or is this just BA doing overdue upkeep?
