United has long had the best mobile app of any US carrier, but American Airlines is rolling out a series of digital upgrades that are designed to make booking, managing, and recovering from travel disruptions easier for customers while starting to move forward in closing the gap between the apps and overall digital experience.
Among the biggest changes is the addition of Venmo as a payment option to give travelers another way to purchase flights. The airline also expanded Apple Pay to additional booking paths, which allows customers to complete purchases more quickly using their preferred digital wallets. American says Venmo support will be added to its mobile app in the future.
The airline is also improving how customers handle delays and cancellations. New digital tools available through the American Airlines app and website provide more detailed information about disruptions, explain the cause of delays, and allow eligible travelers to rebook flights without waiting to speak with an agent.
When applicable, customers can also access hotel accommodations, meal vouchers, and ground transportation assistance directly through the airline’s self-service platform. American recently introduced automated meal vouchers for eligible AAdvantage® members and now automatically checks in qualifying customers who have been rebooked following a disruption.

At the airport, American continues expanding access to TSA PreCheck® Touchless ID, which allows eligible travelers to verify their identity at participating security checkpoints without presenting a physical ID or boarding pass. More than two million customers have already enrolled in the program. I love this program and am using it more than CLEAR these days.
Beginning next month, travelers will also be able to opt into Touchless ID during online check-in on the site to make enrollment even more convenient. The technology is currently available at all of American’s hub airports and more than 60 airports across its network.
Anthony’s Take: The latest enhancements are part of American Airlines’ broader effort to create a more seamless, mobile-first travel experience by giving customers greater control over every stage of their journey (from booking and payment to airport processing and irregular operations).
