A few weeks ago, I wrote about how American Airlines was adding daily nonstop flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) beginning on March 27th. This was a big deal for American and a return to flying to Asia from its Midwest hub. Today, it appears that the battle rages on and United Airlines is touting that it will be adding a second daily nonstop flight to Tokyo (on this exact same route beginning on October 24th). United last flew this route in 2020 and I first covered this addition back in May. It appears that United is just rubbing salt in the wounds since it will restart the route first.
The new route will be American’s 11th long-haul destination from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and will be operated year-round using a Boeing 787-9 aircraft with 30 Flagship® Business suites, 21 Premium Economy, and 254 Economy Class seats. These are not the newest Boeing 787-9 aircraft that designated 787-9P. I recently flew that aircraft to London Heathrow Airport (LHR) (review here).
United offers tons of flights globally, but currently only flies to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) out of Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). The addition of flights to Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) is a direct shot at American Airlines.
American’s service is being launched in partnership with Japan Airlines under the carriers’ Pacific Joint Business agreement to provide travelers with convenient one-stop connections beyond Tokyo to destinations across Asia including Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), Singapore Changi Airport (SIN), Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TPE), and Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN). United offers its own flights from Tokyo (not to mention tons more connecting options with its Star Alliance partners ANA, EVA, Singapore Airlines, and Thai Airways). United and ANA are joint venture partners as well. Flights on United metal include:
- Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB)
- Guam’s Antonio B. Won Pat International Airport (GUM)
- Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH)
- Palau’s Roman Tmetuchl International Airport (ROR)
- Saipan International Airport (SPN)
- Ulaanbaatar’s Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN)
