KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is revamping its Economy Class dining experience across its European network with the launch of Grand Café KLM (a new onboard food and beverage program that gives travelers more dining options while shifting several previously complimentary items to a paid menu).
The new service will debut in October on European flights and allow passengers to either pre-order meals before departure or purchase food and drinks from an expanded onboard selection during their journey. Customers will be able to reserve meals in advance, including options such as poke bowls and Caesar salads, while the inflight menu will feature lighter fare like salmon and egg wraps and yogurt with fruit and seeds.
KLM will continue to provide a complimentary offering, though it will be more limited than before. Travelers will still receive coffee, tea, water, orange juice, and the airline’s signature stroopwafel at no charge.
The introduction of Grand Café KLM follows months of testing as the airline evaluated new catering concepts and operational procedures across a number of European routes. The move aligns KLM with a growing number of European full-service airlines that are expanding buy-on-board options. At the same time, it represents a notable change for travelers accustomed to receiving complimentary sandwiches and a broader selection of beverages on KLM’s short-haul flights.
The catering update is part of a broader investment in KLM’s European operation. In recent years, the airline has introduced new Airbus A321neo and Embraer E195-E2 aircraft equipped with larger overhead bins, USB charging ports, and updated cabin interiors. Earlier this year, KLM also rolled out complimentary Wi-Fi on its European network.
Anthony’s Take: With Grand Café KLM, the airline is aiming to save money while offering passengers more choice and adapting its onboard product to what it calls changing customer preferences and industry trends.
