Lufthansa Group is ushering in a new era of onboard connectivity with the launch of free high-speed internet powered by Starlink and will become one of the first major airline groups to roll out the satellite-based service across multiple carriers.
The new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi service will make its debut on August 19th, when a Lufthansa Airbus A320neo enters commercial service equipped with Starlink connectivity. The airline says passengers can expect internet speeds capable of supporting activities such as video streaming, cloud-based work, and other bandwidth-intensive applications throughout their flight.

The initial launch marks the beginning of a broader fleet-wide installation program that will eventually equip approximately 850 aircraft across the Lufthansa Group’s airlines. Following Lufthansa, the technology will be introduced on aircraft operated by SWISS, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines with additional installations planned for ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Eurowings. The airline group expects the rollout to be completed by 2029.
Unlike many airline Wi-Fi services that require passengers to purchase internet packages, Lufthansa Group will provide the new service free of charge for Miles & More members and Travel ID users (regardless of the cabin they are traveling in).
The system uses Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellite network, which offers significantly lower latency and faster speeds than traditional satellite internet, helping deliver a more consistent online experience throughout the flight. To ensure a comfortable cabin environment, Lufthansa Group has also introduced new usage guidelines. Passengers will be asked to wear headphones when consuming audio or video content, while voice calls, video calls, and live streaming from onboard the aircraft will not be permitted. The new connectivity platform is being sponsored by Mastercard, which previously partnered with Lufthansa’s FlyNet internet service.
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group, said:
I am excited to announce the launch of the new Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi on board our Group aircraft. With it, we’re making high-speed internet an integral part of the travel experience – across all travel classes and on all Lufthansa Group airlines: That is how we understand premium. By 2029, all of the Group’s approximately 850 aircraft will be equipped with the technology. Our product promise doesn’t end with the seats or the menu – today, connectivity is also an integral part of a truly outstanding onboard experience.”
Anthony’s Take: The Starlink rollout is part of Lufthansa Group’s broader investment in modernizing both its fleet and passenger experience, with the company aiming to deliver faster, more reliable connectivity across all of its airlines in the coming years. This is a welcome addition and I can’t wait for this to be in service.
