Air New Zealand operates some of the world’s longest flights. It’s now set to redefine long-haul travel with the launch of its groundbreaking Economy Skynest™, a world-first innovation that will allow Economy Class passengers to book lie-flat sleep pods in the sky. The new product will open for reservations on May 18th and debut onboard the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 aircraft starting in November.

The Skynest™ will initially operate on flights between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Auckland Airport (AKL). Designed to transform the Economy Class experience, the Skynest™ introduces six lie-flat pods arranged in a bunk-style layout positioned between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins. For the first time, passengers in these cabins will have the option to book dedicated time to stretch out fully, lie flat, and sleep during their journey.

Each pod has been developed over several years and tested with more than 200 customers to ensure optimal comfort. The result is a private, calming space equipped with a full-length mattress, fresh bedding, ambient lighting, ventilation, and charging ports. Passengers can reserve four-hour sessions with two sessions available per flight at launch (allowing time to settle in, sleep, and wake naturally).

The concept reflects Air New Zealand’s long-standing focus on innovation, particularly in addressing the challenges of ultra-long-haul travel. By offering lie-flat rest beyond business class, the airline is expanding comfort options to a broader range of travelers.

The Skynest™ experience also includes thoughtful amenities designed for rest and well-being. Each session comes with a “Nestcessities” kit featuring an eye mask, ear plugs, socks, skincare products, and dental essentials. Privacy curtains, individual lighting controls, and in-pod seatbelts further enhance the experience to create a dedicated sleep environment within the cabin.

Pricing for the Skynest™ will start at $495 per session and be positioned as an optional upgrade for passengers seeking additional comfort without booking a premium cabin.

The introduction of Skynest™ is part of a wider cabin overhaul on Air New Zealand’s new aircraft. Business Premier will feature upgraded suites (including the new Business Premier Luxe seats with closing doors and companion dining options). Premium Economy seats will offer enhanced recline without impacting passengers behind. Economy travelers will benefit from improved storage and large 13.3-inch seatback screens.
Passengers in both Economy and Premium Economy will also have access to the Sky Pantry, which is a self-service area stocked with snacks and drinks available throughout the flight.
Anthony’s Take: I had seen this some time ago and it’s exciting that it’s coming to be a reality. With Skynest™, Air New Zealand is pushing the boundaries of what Economy travel can offer while signaling a shift toward more flexible and customizable inflight experiences. As airlines continue to explore new ways to improve passenger comfort on increasingly long routes this innovation is quite exciting. Now, let’s see who copies it.
