United Airlines is celebrating its 100th anniversary and along with it has brought back some historical dishes. I decided to try it on a flight from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Tampa International Airport (TPA) and pre-ordered accordingly. It’s only available when selected in advance and the way it was presented to me was anything but festive.

The dish is described as “Coq au Vin with pommes puree, bacon, and caramelized pearl onions.” I received a dish of mush.

The meal began with mixed nut and a choice of beverage. I had a ginger ale.

The meal came on one tray and did not look right. It was soupy, oily, and very salty. I took a few bites and was done. It was served with a brown bread roll, a green salad, and Magnolia Bakery’s special edition pudding for United’s 100th anniversary.

The Magnolia Bakery “Jetstream Dream” pudding tasted artificial and chemically. I did not like it and will not be eating it again.

The best part of the meal came last. United has brought back Godiva chocolates and each passenger in First Class was given one close to landing.
Anthony’s Take: This meal was disappointing. The flight attendant working up front noticed that I did not like my meal and proactively offered me an electronic travel voucher as an apology. That was sweet and unexpected. I was hoping for something tasty and this meal did not deliver.

So far the best thing I’ve had on United is the Southwest salad. I appreciate it comes with a side of chicken breast so I can add it in.
My wife and I had the same meal on Apr 4 afternoon flight MIA_DEN and had similar reaction to you. (Only diff was she sprinkled some parsley flakes on top.) Unlike you, we received no Godiva chocolates (nor apology voucher). Wondering if our young FA’s, who seemed to prioritize socializing more than service, may have pocketed the chocolates rather than serve them? One data point was the surprise I saw them express (from seat 3A) when pilot announced “get ready for landing” as they had been frolicking with each other for quite awhile and likely lost track of time (as well as customer’s dirty glasses and dishes). Delta still gets my business (except where JSX flies).
