Brazilian carrier GOL Linhas Aéreas has officially entered the long-haul market, launching its first-ever intercontinental route with new nonstop service between Rio de Janeiro/Galeão International Airport (GIG) and New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

The inaugural flight departed on July 8th with the first return service from New York having taken off on July 9th. The route operates 3x weekly with flights from Rio on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and return flights from New York on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

While the new service is marketed by GOL, the inaugural flights are being operated under an ACMI agreement by fellow Abra Group carrier Wamos Air using an Airbus A330-200. The arrangement will remain in place until GOL begins taking delivery of its new Airbus A330-900neo aircraft.

Passengers traveling in GOL’s new Business INSIGNIA cabin can expect a premium long-haul experience featuring fully lie-flat seats, upgraded dining, and menus created by Michelin-starred Brazilian chef Felipe Bronze, highlighting regional Brazilian cuisine.

The new route also strengthens connectivity beyond Rio. Through GOL’s extensive domestic network, travelers can connect to São Paulo and dozens of destinations across Brazil. In addition, GOL’s partnership with American Airlines allows passengers to earn and redeem AAdvantage miles on connecting flights throughout North and South America. The new service also expands cargo capacity between Brazil and the United States through GOLLOG and its partnership with Avianca Cargo, further strengthening trade links between the two countries.

Anthony’s Take: The launch marks a significant milestone for GOL as it transforms Brazil’s largest domestic airline into a long-haul international carrier while providing travelers with another nonstop option between Brazil and the United States.
