Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is undergoing an overhaul of its current terminals and gates. This will combine several terminals and make way for a future Terminal 9 (which will be known as Terminal 8).
LAX will rename its terminals, gates, people mover stations, and other facilities as part of a wayfinding enhancement program. Terminals 2 and 3 become Terminal 2/T2. What’s Changing?
The airport will rename its current terminals, combine several, rename gates, and more. This is all being done to make the airport simpler for passengers in preparation for FIFA World Cup in 2026 as well as the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028. Here are the specific changes:
- Terminal 1 and Concourse 0 will combine and be called Terminal 1. Airlines in this terminal include: Allegiant, Breeze Airways, Cayman Airways, Frontier Airlines, Southwest, Viva Aerobus. All of these airlines (except Southwest) will have check in here, but flights will depart/arrive at Tom Bradley, which will be known as Terminal 3 in the future. Baggage claim will be in Terminal 1
- Terminals 2 and 3 will combine and be known as Terminal 2. Airlines in this terminal include: Aeromexico, Condor, Delta Air Lines, Norse, Virgin Atlantic, and WestJet. All of these airlines (except Delta domestic flights, Virgin Atlantic, and WestJet) will have check in here, but flights will depart/arrive at Tom Bradley, which will be known as Terminal 3 in the future. Baggage claim will be in Terminal 2
- Terminal 3 will be the new name for the Tom Bradley International Terminal. Airlines in this terminal include: Aer Lingus, Air China, Air France, Air Premia, Air New Zealand, Air Tahiti Nui, All Nippon Airways, Asiana, Austrian, Avianca, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, China Airlines, China Eastern, China Southern, Copa, El Al, Emirates Airlines, EVA Air, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Flair Airlines, French Bee, Hainan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia, ITA Airways, Japan Airlines, KLM, Korean Air, LATAM Airlines, Level, LOT Polish, Lufthansa, Philippine Airlines, QANTAS, Qatar Airways, SAS, SAUDIA, Sichuan Airlines, Singapore, STARLUX, SWISS, Turkish Airlines, Volaris, Xiamen Airlines, and ZIPAIR
- Terminal 4 and Terminal 5 will continue to host American Airlines. Spirit and JetBlue will also remain in Terminal 5
- Terminal 6 will continue to hold Air Canada, Horizon, Porter, and Southern Airways
- Terminal 7 and Terminal 8 will continue as United Airlines’ home, but these will combine to be known as Terminal 7
- A new Terminal 9 will be constructed. It will be be known as Terminal 8
In addition to the changes to the Terminal naming, People Mover stations will be renamed with letters A to G.
Anthony’s Take: I’m not sure this makes navigating LAX simpler, but it does get rid of the odd Terminal B for Tom Bradley and make keep airlines housed where they currently are flying from.
