A new travel option launching June 1st is set to change the way some passengers fly out of Boston Logan International Airport (BOS). Through a first-of-its-kind partnership between Landline and Massport, travelers flying with Delta Air Lines and JetBlue will be able to check in, drop bags, and clear TSA security at a remote terminal in Framingham before boarding a shuttle bus directly to their gate area inside Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
Located at 19 Flutie Pass in Framingham, the new Logan Airport Remote Terminal is being billed as North America’s first off-airport TSA screening facility. The concept allows passengers to bypass much of the congestion typically associated with the Boston airport’s terminals while also saving money on parking. After completing security screening in Framingham, passengers board a Landline coach bus that delivers them directly to the secure side of the airport. Delta travelers will arrive near Gate A18 in Terminal A while JetBlue passengers will be dropped off near Gate C8 in Terminal C.
The service launches with eight daily departures between Framingham and Logan, with buses leaving every hour from 4:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Return trips from Logan will run every 20 to 30 minutes depending on the time of day. Travel times range from roughly 40 minutes during lighter traffic periods to more than an hour during peak rush hour. The service is priced at $9 each way for adults (children under 18 ride free with a ticketed family member). Limited parking at the Framingham facility costs $29 per day. This is significantly less than airport garage rates, which can range from $37 to $49 daily.
While the remote terminal offers only basic amenities including seating, restrooms, vending machines, and water stations, the main attraction is convenience. Travelers can avoid crowded airline counters and security checkpoints at the airport while letting someone else handle the stressful drive into Boston. Landline recommends passengers arrive at the Framingham terminal 45 minutes before their scheduled bus departure. Checked baggage closes at that time while TSA screening ends 35 minutes prior to departure. Each bus accommodates up to 55 passengers.
The program builds on Landline’s growing model of integrating bus transportation directly into the airport experience. This is similar to services already operating with American Airlines at hubs including Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Officials say the Framingham facility could be the first of several remote airport terminals serving Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) with another location already being planned in Braintree.
Anthony’s Take: For travelers coming from western Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire, or Vermont, the remote terminal could offer a far less stressful way to begin a trip while avoiding some of the busiest parts of the airport experience altogether.
