Air New Zealand has officially opened reservations for its Economy Skynest™ today, May 18th. Travelers have the opportunity to book the world’s first lie-flat sleep pods designed specifically for Economy and Premium Economy passengers that I first wrote about in April. The innovative Skynest™ product will debut in December 2026 aboard the airline’s newly redesigned Boeing 787-9 aircraft while initially operating on ultra-long-haul flights between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Auckland Airport (AKL).

Positioned between the Economy and Premium Economy cabins, the Skynest™ features six bunk-style lie-flat sleep pods that passengers can reserve during their journey. The concept is designed to redefine long-haul comfort by allowing non-Business-Class travelers to fully stretch out and rest at 30,000 feet.

Each passenger can reserve one four-hour sleep session during the booking process, selecting both their preferred time slot and bunk. The pods include full bedding, full-size pillows, earplugs, USB charging ports, reading lights and a cooling ventilation system. Specialized ambient lighting and privacy curtains help create a calming sleep-focused environment inside the cabin.

Air New Zealand says the product has been years in development and was tested with more than 200 customers to refine comfort and functionality. Every session also includes a “Nestcessities” kit featuring an eye mask, socks, skincare products and dental essentials.

The Skynest™ experience will start at approximately $495 per four-hour session and will serve as an optional add-on for Economy and Premium Economy travelers seeking enhanced rest without upgrading to Business Class.

The launch forms part of a broader overhaul of Air New Zealand’s long-haul cabins. In addition to Skynest™, the airline’s new Boeing 787-9 interiors will feature upgraded Business Premier suites, redesigned Premium Economy seating, and improved Economy cabins with larger 13.3-inch seatback screens and enhanced storage. Passengers in Economy and Premium Economy will also have access to the new Sky Pantry self-service snack and beverage area throughout the flight.

Anthony’s Take: As airlines continue searching for new ways to improve ultra-long-haul travel, Air New Zealand’s Skynest™ represents one of the most ambitious cabin innovations in years and could fundamentally reshape expectations for Economy Class flying in the future.
