United Airlines always does a fabulous job of teasing new routes and at times makes the clues really difficult to decipher. American Airlines is taking a page from United’s playbook and just posted its own teaser to highlight five international cities that will soon have new service from the Fort Worth-based carrier. It looks like none of the destinations are new, but the originating cities will be adds. Unless this is all a ruse and American is introducing something else.

The destinations highlighted above are clearly as follows:

  • Copenhagen Airport (CPH)
  • Munich Airport (MUC)
  • Naples-Capodichino International Airport (NAP)
  • Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO)
  • Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL)

What’s not clear is where these flights will originate and if these are going to be the new routes. American currently flies between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and both Copenhagen Airport (CPH) and Naples-Capodichino International Airport (NAP). Munich Airport (MUC) is currently served by American from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Quito’s Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) has American flights to/from Miami International Airport (MIA). And finally, Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) has service on American to/from Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Miami International Airport (MIA).

Anthony’s Take: I am going to bet that we see at least one addition coming from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). American has been trying to step up its battle with United at the Chicago hub and this would make sense. Is American making this game that easy or are these routes meant to just throw us all off?
