Avelo Airlines is expanding its footprint in Texas by launching the first commercial service at McKinney National Airport (DTX). It will be the first and only commercial airline serving Collin County.

Service begins on November 11th with nonstop flights to Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Over the following week, Avelo will add service to Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), Orlando International Airport (MCO), Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), and Tampa International Airport (TPA).

The new routes include:

  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) (4x weekly; starts on November 19th)
  • Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) (4x weekly; starts on November 12th)
  • Orlando International Airport (MCO) (5x weekly; starts on November 12th)
  • Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) (2x weekly; starts on November 11th)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA) (4x weekly; starts on November 19th)

Avelo will base two 184-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft at the airport and create more than 100 local jobs (including positions for pilots, flight attendants, aircraft technicians, and airport staff).

The launch also marks a major milestone for McKinney National Airport (DTX), which has traditionally served general aviation. Last year, the city broke ground on a new 46,000-square-foot passenger terminal designed to support commercial airline operations and provide North Texas travelers with an alternative to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Dallas Love Field (DAL). Located roughly 30 miles north of both major airports, the airport is well-positioned to serve the rapidly growing communities of Collin County.

Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO, Andrew Levy, said:

Avelo was built for moments like this, and we are thrilled to be the launch and anchor airline at McKinney. Our everyday low fares, the ease of using DTX, and our consistent industry leading on-time performance are a winning combination for travelers. As a proud Texas-born company, we are excited to grow our presence in North Texas and Collin County, one of the fastest growing areas in America. Once you fly with us, you’ll understand what we mean — if you know, you Avelo.”

Anthony’s Take: Avelo’s initial route map makes its strategy clear: focus on popular leisure destinations. Four of the airline’s five inaugural routes head to Florida while Las Vegas rounds out the lineup. This gives North Texas travelers more convenient options for vacations without the crowds of the region’s larger airports.
