American Airlines has been engaged in an ongoing battle with United Airlines over their shared hub at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD). United wants American out and has even floated the idea of buying the airline (those thoughts were shutdown). American is digging its heels in, holding a pep rally at the airport for employees, and plans to announce a new transpacific route to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT).

American posted a clue on a new route coming from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on Instagram. The blurred image is of Osaka Garden (the Japanese garden located at Jackson Park in Chicago). It’s meant to illustrate Japan and not specifically the city of Osaka.

Osaka Chicago

Here is an unblurred view of the park.

Airline watchdog, @JonNYC, put this guess out first and it makes sense.

Service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Japan is not new for American Airlines. Flights to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) initially launched in 1998. These were cut during the pandemic in 2020. The returning route would strengthen American’s presence in one of Asia’s most important business and leisure markets while giving travelers in the Midwest another nonstop option to Japan. The announcement would also bolster American’s joint business partnership with Japan Airlines and offer customers expanded connectivity beyond Tokyo to destinations throughout Japan and Asia.

Once launched, the route is expected to appeal to both corporate travelers and tourists with Tokyo remaining one of the world’s most sought-after international destinations thanks to its mix of culture, cuisine, technology, and business opportunities.

Anthony’s Take: American Airlines is expected to release additional details, including the launch date, flight schedule, and aircraft type when the route is officially announced.
