Those with plans to visit the Capital One Lounge at Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) (review here) are about to notice a significant change. Beginning July 9th, the lounge will temporarily operate under a limited-service model while Capital One completes essential infrastructure and ventilation upgrades. The full lounge experience is expected to return in early fall.
During the renovation period, the lounge’s main seating areas, dining stations, and signature amenities will be unavailable. Instead, operations will be centered around the café area adjacent to the entrance, which will remain open throughout construction. Capital One says guests can expect an enhanced grab-and-go experience featuring sandwiches, salads, fruit, snacks, desserts, and beverages, along with additional food and drink offerings designed to partially replace the lounge’s popular buffet-style dining program.
One of the biggest losses for travelers will be the temporary closure of the lounge’s full-service bar. This location has become known for its locally inspired beverage program, featuring craft beers, regional spirits, and signature cocktails created by Washington-area bartender Will Patton. This Capital One Lounge opened in September 2023 and quickly became one of the airport’s most sought-after premium spaces. However, like many airport lounges, it has regularly struggled with overcrowding and lengthy waitlists during peak travel periods. It’s unclear how the reduced footprint will impact lounge capacity and wait times during the renovation. Guests can continue using the Capital One app to check lounge occupancy and join the waitlist before arriving.
The temporary changes come just months after Capital One implemented stricter lounge access rules. Earlier this year, the company eliminated complimentary guest access for Venture X and Venture X Business cardholders and ended free lounge visits for Venture Rewards cardholders in an effort to reduce overcrowding.
Capital One released the following statement:
Starting July 9, 2026, the Capital One Lounge at IAD will temporarily transition to a limited-service model to accommodate essential infrastructure and ventilation upgrades, with an anticipated reopening in early fall of this year. At Capital One, we are consistently listening to our customers, and these necessary structural enhancements are being made to improve temperature consistency and maintain a safe, comfortable guest environment year round. As the construction will take place throughout the seating areas, interior seating and bar service will be temporarily unavailable.
During this time, the lounge will remain open with a modified guest experience centered around elevated Grab-and-Go offerings, premium refreshments, and curated food and beverage experiences. Guests will continue to have access to the cafe area to enjoy full-service coffee bar offerings, tea, canned beverages, pastries, and select menu items available through a dedicated food service area. Ritual Cart programming will continue with rotating specialty offerings and guests will have access to designated, cafe-style seating located just outside of the lounge.
