A United Airlines flight departing Denver International Airport (DEN) was forced to return to the gate Sunday evening following a reported bomb scare. This led to a full evacuation of passengers onto the tarmac so that the aircraft could be screened. This is the second one this weekend and I can’t imagine how scary that must have been for all of the passengers and crew on both flights.
On Saturday, I wrote about a United Airlines flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) that was forced to divert to Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) following a midair security scare involving a possible suspicious device that prompted an emergency response. This ended up being nothing hazardous and the flight continued on after being cleared.
United Airlines flight UA 2408 was scheduled to travel from Denver International Airport (DEN) to Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) yesterday. It had already taxied toward takeoff when the crew was alerted to a threat. The aircraft was brought back to the gate where passengers were evacuated as a precaution. K9 teams were deployed to sweep the aircraft, but no explosives were found.
After security procedures were completed and the aircraft was cleared, the flight departed hours behind schedule (and made it without further incident).
Thankfully, no injuries were reported in either incident and both flights were ultimately able to continue to their destinations after security screenings were completed.
Anthony’s Take: The back-to-back events highlight the seriousness with which airlines and authorities respond to potential security threats (even when they ultimately prove to be unfounded). Hopefully, we won’t see any more of these false alarms for a while, but they always must be checked out.
