Memphis International Airport (MEM) has officially been renamed Frederick W. Smith International Airport (MEM) to recognize the extraordinary impact of the late FedEx founder whose vision transformed Memphis into one of the world’s leading cargo aviation hubs.
The dedication ceremony took place on August 11th, honoring Smith, who founded FedEx in 1971 and built the company into a global logistics powerhouse headquartered in Memphis. To commemorate the occasion, FedEx flew one of its Boeing 777 freighters to the airport in a special retro paint scheme. The aircraft, named “Rosie” after Smith’s granddaughter features the original 1973 Federal Express livery and pays tribute to the company’s earliest days.
The event drew company executives, government officials, employees, and community leaders, including FedEx President and CEO Raj Subramaniam and US Senator Marsha Blackburn, who reflected on Smith’s lasting influence on both the aviation industry and the city of Memphis.
While the airport’s new name is now official, signage and branding updates will be introduced gradually to minimize disruptions to airport operations and travelers. The ceremony also marked the launch of FWS Day of Service, a new global volunteer initiative that encourages FedEx team members around the world to give back to their communities in honor of Smith’s legacy.
