Delta Air Lines announced today that it will begin flying nonstop between Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Haneda Airport (HND) in Tokyo this October. Nonstop, daily flights will begin on October 29th on a Boeing 767-300ER with Delta One®, Premium Select, Comfort+, and Main Cabin seating.

This is the first time that Delta has flown between Honolulu and Tokyo’s Haneda airport. Delta moved all of its Tokyo operations from Narita International Airport (NRT) in March 2020. The pandemic delayed the full utilization of the airport move. Delta will be competing with ANA, Hawaiian Airlines, and Japan Airlines on the route.

Delta currently flies between Haneda Airport (HND) and its hubs in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), Portland International Airport (PDX), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

Victor Osumi, Delta’s Managing Director and President – Japan, said:

As travel demand gradually recovers in Japan, we decided to add the new Honolulu service to our HND network. Our commitment to both markets remains strong. Customers will enjoy more options and destinations from Haneda, with Delta’s unparalleled premium experience on the ground and in the air.”

Anthony’s Take: Narita used to be a Delta hub and it’s interesting to see the carrier continue to grow in Haneda. I wonder if it will ever add back the Singapore and Manila flights it cut in 2019.

How on earth did they manage to get a Haneda landing slot? Considering that they just dumped a Haneda flight (from PDX IIRC) and the U.S. government specifically wouldn’t let Delta move that departure to another U.S. city they should have had no chance at all to pull off something like this.

You’re correct. I fixed it. I think I must have seen a codeshare. Thanks for pointing this out.
