As the song goes, “Chicago is my kind of town.” I just hit my nine-year anniversary of living in the Windy City and love it (except for the winters when I defect to Florida). Apparently, I’m not alone as the readers of Condé Nast Traveler have voted it the “Best Big City” for the seventh year in a row through the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards.

Chicago’s win as the “Best Big City” in the US recognizes that Chicago is a great destination with something for every visitor.  There are 77 neighborhoods across the city with some of the best restaurants, museums, theater, and a lake right in the middle of the city. Chicago has some of the most unique and diverse architecture and I highly recommend one of the architectural boat tours to anyone visiting the city. Over 520,000 readers voted in the survey and I’m proud they chose Chicago.

Illinois Governor, JB Pritzker, said:

For the seventh year running, I couldn’t be prouder that Chicago has been named the number one big city in the nation. From our unmatched infrastructure and picturesque lakefronts to our diverse food scene, world-class museums, and, of course, the kindest people you’ll ever meet, Chicago has it all—and the world is taking notice. Whether you’re looking to take a family trip or to relocate your small business, Chicago has something for everyone and we cannot wait to welcome you home.”

Chicago Mayor, Brandon Johnson, added:

Today’s recognition of our great city as the Condé Nast Traveler’s Best Big City in The US, for the seventh year in a row, is proof that Chicago continues to be a force as a destination for visitors from all over the globe. We have something for everyone — 77 amazing communities, beautiful parks and lakefront, world class arts, culture and food, and much more. This is a distinction to be proud of, and we will continue to welcome travelers from all over the world to experience all our city has to offer and the soul of Chicago.”

Choose Chicago® (the destination marketing organization for Chicago) released summer 2023 performance data today. Highlights include:

  • Summer (June, July, and August) hotel revenue totaled $825 million, which was an all-time record high.
  • Over one million room nights were filled each month this summer, totaling 3.24 million hotel room nights. This is up 4% from 2022 and shows a 92% recovery from the 2019 total.
  • International travelers increased by 13% compared to summer 2022.

Anthony’s Take: You can’t believe what you see on certain news stations. Chicago is a great city and one that I call home. Sure, there are issues (where are there not?), but it offers a great mix of dining, culture, outdoor activities (I was just on the beach this past weekend), and more.

>Sure, there are issues (where are there not?)

This, perhaps, is the most hilarious take. This is your reply to Black citizens getting murdered by the dozens next to your doorstep (or as it were, on the other side of the tracks)?

To shrug your shoulders?

Sara,

Do you know the composition of the crime? It is not random murders but often are related to illicit activity.

When I describe Chicago to people who haven’t been there, I call it a gigantic sports bar. If you like sports, eating, and drinking, it’s your place. There’s also an oversupply of nice hotels, meaning you can usually get a good value wherever you stay.

Anyone have any thoughts they want to share of Conde Nast Traveller? Whenever I look for a review of a property, they seem to always have a review for whatever property I am looking at… And all of the reviews seem positive.
