During the first three quarters of 2023, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) prevented 5,072 firearms from being brought on planes (1,820 were found in the last quarter). At the current rate, the agency will surpass last year’s record of 6,542 firearms found at security checkpoints.

TSA PreCheck

The total confiscated equals an average 19.8 firearms per day at TSA checkpoints nationwide. Alarmingly, more than 94% were loaded. If a passenger tries to bring a firearm through a TSA checkpoint, local law enforcement will be contacted to safely unload and take possession of it. The law enforcement officer may also arrest or cite the passenger, depending on local laws. Additionally, the TSA may impose a fine of up to around $15,000. Passengers will also lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility for five years.

TSA Administrator, David Pekoske, said:

Passengers may travel with a firearm, but it must be in their checked baggage. Firearms are only permitted in checked baggage, unloaded in a locked hard-sided case and must be declared to the airline when checking the bag at the ticket counter. Firearms are prohibited at security checkpoints, in the secure area of an airport or in the passenger cabin of an aircraft even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction.”

Anthony’s Take: As much as many people call the TSA security theater, I feel safer knowing that they’re finding handguns in carry-on bags. Are they perfect, no, but this many found is still good work.
