Alaska Airlines announced yesterday that it was adding service between Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) and Harry Reid Las Vegas International Airport (LAS). Avelo Airlines has been flying this route and this is a direct challenge to the low-cost carrier as it tries to increase its presence in Santa Rosa/Sonoma County (it recently added four other routes).

Alaska Santa Rosa

Alaska will operate the route year-round with one flight daily on an Embraer 175 with 12 First Class, 12 Premium, and 52 Economy Class seats. This is not the only shot fired across the bough as Alaska is focusing on flights to Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), which is also served by Avelo.

Kirsten Amrine, Vice President of Network Planning and Revenue Management at Alaska Airlines, said:

We feel a deep connection with Santa Rosa – Alaska became the first carrier to bring commercial service to Sonoma County Airport nearly two decades ago – and we’ve remained the largest airline at STS serving nearly 2 million guests since then. As the only airline serving all four Bay Area airports, including Santa RosaSan FranciscoSan Jose and Oakland, we can’t wait to connect guests between Santa Rosa and Las Vegas and have them experience our premium, award-winning service.”

Alaska will also fly to/from Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) and:

  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)
  • John Wayne Airport (SNA)
  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
  • Portland International Airport (PDX)
  • San Diego International Airport (SAN)
  • Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA)

Avelo will serve eight destinations to/from Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) and:

  • Bend Municipal Airport (BDN)
  • Boise Airport (BOI)
  • Glacier Park International Airport (FCA)
  • Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR)
  • Harry Reid Las Vegas International Airport (LAS)
  • Palm Springs International Airport (PSP)
  • Salem Municipal Airport (SLE)
  • Tri-Cities Airport (PSC)

Anthony’s Take: It’s clear that Alaska Airlines is making a play for this route. It already flies to 25% of the destinations Avelo serves here. We’ll have to wait and see if it adds others.
