Air Canada has announced it will suspend all flights to and from New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) between June 2nd and October 23rd.

Prior to the suspension, the airline operated a modest but consistent schedule at New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), including one daily flight to Montréal-Trudeau International Airport  (YUL) and 3x daily flights to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). These routes primarily served business and connecting travelers, linking New York City with two of Canada’s largest metropolitan areas.

This move, however, is not without precedent. Air Canada previously exited New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) on April 3, 2016, citing operational challenges tied to the airport’s congestion. At the time, the airline pointed to limited flexibility in securing convenient arrival and departure slots, which made it difficult to maintain an efficient and competitive schedule. The issue stemmed from ongoing schedule adjustments at the airport, which constrained airlines’ ability to operate at optimal times.

The current suspension appears to reflect similar concerns along with ongoing drops in demand. JFK remains one of the most crowded airports in North America with persistent air traffic congestion and slot limitations continuing to affect airline operations. For Air Canada, shifting operations away from the airport and focusing on the other two in the area during peak travel months may help the airline better manage its resources.

Despite the suspension, Air Canada will continue serving the New York metropolitan area through its existing operations at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). These airports will absorb displaced traffic to ensure that travelers still have access to flights between New York and major Canadian cities.

For passengers, the change may require some adjustment, particularly for those who prefer JFK due to its international connectivity. However, both of the other airports offer extensive domestic and transborder services and Air Canada’s continued presence at these airports is expected to minimize disruption.

Anthony’s Take: Newark makes sense given the ties to United and New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA) is good for these short hops. Let’s see if this is truly a congestion issue or if Air Canada stays away from JFK in the future.
