Travelers holding the Platinum Card® by American Express now have an even more valuable lounge benefit when flying with the Lufthansa Group. Lufthansa has updated its lounge access policy to extend access to include all Lufthansa Group airlines on same-day flights.
Under the revised rules, eligible cardmembers traveling with any Lufthansa Group carrier can now access participating Lufthansa lounges in Germany and select international locations. This marks a significant improvement in one of the most useful credit card travel perks available in Europe.
Previously, lounge access was restricted to passengers flying on flights operated only by Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, or SWISS. This created confusion and frustration, especially as Lufthansa increasingly shifted more routes to sister airlines such as Eurowings and Discover Airlines.
Now, travelers with a same-day boarding pass on any Lufthansa Group airline are eligible, including:
- Air Dolomiti
- Austrian Airlines
- Brussels Airlines
- Discover Airlines
- Edelweiss Air
- Eurowings
- Lufthansa
- Lufthansa City Airlines
- SWISS
This change ensures that passengers can access lounges regardless of which Lufthansa Group airline operates their flight. This is a much-needed update given the group’s evolving network structure. Notably, ITA Airways is not currently included in the eligible carrier list, which may reflect either an oversight or a future addition.
The cooperation between American Express and Lufthansa has been in place for roughly seven years and has become a particularly valuable tool for travelers departing from German airports (where third-party lounge options can be limited).
While earlier access was largely focused on lounges at Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and Munich Airport (MUC), Lufthansa has now opened access across its wider lounge network throughout Germany to make the benefit far more practical for travelers flying from additional airports.
Lufthansa operates several tiers of lounges and access through American Express depends on both your cabin and card type:
- Lufthansa Business Class Lounges: Platinum Card members flying in Economy Class on any Lufthansa Group airline
- Lufthansa Senator Lounges: Platinum Card members flying in Business Class on any Lufthansa Group airline
- Lufthansa First Class Lounges: Centurion Card members flying in any cabin on any Lufthansa Group airline

Even with Centurion access, the Lufthansa First Class Terminal in Frankfurt remains excluded. This tiered structure ensures that the lounge experience aligns with the traveler’s ticket class while still providing meaningful access even for Economy Class passengers.
At a time when lounge access is becoming increasingly restrictive across the industry, this expansion stands out as a traveler-friendly move. It allows American Express Platinum and Business Platinum cardmembers to enjoy preflight dining, work spaces, and relaxation when flying any Lufthansa Group airline.
For frequent flyers, leisure travelers, and anyone who values a calm airport experience, this policy change makes the Platinum Card’s Lufthansa lounge benefit significantly stronger.
Anthony’s Take: With Lufthansa Group travel continuing to expand across Europe and beyond this broader lounge access could meaningfully improve the journey for thousands of eligible cardmembers on their next trip.
