The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for a busy Spring Break. The peak travel period runs from March 7th to March 25th and this year, the TSA is expecting a 6% increase from 2023.

TSA Administrator, David Pekoske, said:

TSA screened a record number of passengers in 2023, and we expect that trend to continue this year. So far in 2024, travel volumes are trending at nearly 6% above the same period in 2023. We always work closely with our airline and airport partners to plan for and meet the increasing travel demand while doing our best to maintain our wait times of 30 minutes or less in standard lanes and 10 minutes or less in TSA PreCheck® lanes.”

Family at Airport Security

With Spring Break comes lots of children, teenagers, and other passengers that do not travel regularly. Expect delays as lines snake around the terminals. I am thankful for TSA PreCheck® and CLEAR as both of these services can save hours of time. Whether you have TSA PreCheck® or need to go through a standard security line, the TSA recommends the following:

  • Watch your liquids. Only 3.4 ounces or less can go into a carry-on bag.
  • Make sure you have a valid ID.
  • Check your unloaded firearms. I’m not sure why anyone needs to bring a gun on Spring Break, but they can’t be in your carry-on bags or loaded.
  • Arrive early and be patient.

This time of year is always trying in Florida when folks pack the beaches and cause tons of traffic. Miami Beach has already made it unpleasant for Spring Breakers (more here) and I have a feeling we’ll see similar cities follow suit if they have to deal with the crime and violence that plagued South Beach.

Anthony’s Take: Prepare to wait for security, boarding, meals, ride shares, and everything else at the airports this month. Spring Break is almost here and with it the travel chaos. It looks like we’ll see 6% more people vacationing than 2023. Stay safe and try to use some common sense while in the airports.
