Spirit Airlines is offering a status match for elite members in 16 airline and 16 hotel loyalty programs. This is a bit different than past programs in that you are matched by having status, but need to pay a $49 or $99 fee to earn it. Prior challenges required you to fly to retain the status.
I found myself on three Spirit Airlines flights this year. This is something that I never thought I’d be saying and I wanted to maximize the experience and benefits as much as possible. I applied for a status match in January.
I was approved for a status match to Spirit’s top-tier Free Spirit® GOLD within days of applying, so I had the status when I flew them. I almost always buy First or Business Class tickets and that coupled with Global Services or Premier 1K® at United and Platinum Medallion® at Delta meant that my travel experiences were pretty seamless overall. I wanted to continue that trend.
Spirit Airlines frequently runs status match challenges where you need to currently hold elite status with another airline (or hotel chain) in order to qualify for a challenge. I used my United Premier 1K® status to match to Free Spirit® GOLD and had to earn 1,250 Spirit Status Qualifying Points (SQP) within 90 days. This equals $1,250 spent and included money spent for the Big Front Seats. I met the requirements and now have the status through December 2024.
The new status match has an application fee is $49 for Silver and $99 for Gold. Status is good for 12 months once earned. You can apply here.

Anthony’s Take: You can save quite a bit of money if you’re planning on flying spirit between saving on bags and all of the other benefits above. This offer says that it’s for a limited time and I’d recommend acting quickly if you see benefit from holding Free Spirit® status.
