I’ve held Spirit Airlines Free Spirit® Gold status for the past two years. I don’t get much benefit from the status since I buy the Big Front Seats® and the new bundled Go Big fares include bags and snacks. Spirit is trying to replace some of the benefits that elite members lost to the new bundles. One of these new offerings is the ability to upgrade for cash or miles.

Go Big On Us Spirit

Spirit emailed me this week offering a complimentary Go Big upgrade, which includes premium snacks, drinks, and extra space. I’m not sure why it says this is for my next trip (as I’m already seated there). The offer reads:

Get ready for your upcoming trip! As a thank you for being a valued Free Spirit® Gold Member, we’re excited to offer you a complimentary Go Big upgrade, which includes premium snacks, drinks, and extra space. It’s our way of saying we really, really appreciate you. To claim this 1-time offer, just call Guest Care at 833-374-6530.”

Spirit Upgrades

Additionally, Spirit has rolled out a way for Gold members to upgrade using cash or miles. The chart above shows the rates. These are comparable to the rates I have heard gate agents offer for upgrades at the gate. These can be had within 24 hours of departure. I’m not sure I would ever try this as I want a guaranteed bulkhead seat.
