Marriott International, Inc. just hit 9,000 hotels under its massive brand umbrella. The lodging giant is not stopping as it just added its 31st brand under a licensing agreement with Sonder Holdings Inc. This deal will add more than 9,000 rooms to Marriott’s portfolio by year-end and approximately 1,500 rooms to its pipeline.

Sonder’s portfolio, which primarily consists of apartment-style accommodations in urban markets will be added to Marriott’s offerings under the brand name: Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy.

Tim Grisius, Global Officer, M&A, Business Development and Real Estate at Marriott International, said:

We are excited about the addition of Sonder’s portfolio to our system, which will expand our portfolio of longer-stay accommodations in key markets around the world. Marriott has long believed in providing the right product at the right price point for all trip purposes and generations of travelers. With the planned addition of Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy, we will be able to provide guests seeking apartment-style urban accommodations with even more options in the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.”

Sonder NYC

Sonder was founded in 2014 and it currently operates in urban markets offering apartment-style accommodations and small boutique hotels across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Sonder’s offerings appeal to younger travelers and these assets leverage a digital-first operating model that caters to longer stays.

Some of the boutique hotels that are operated under the Sinder umbrella include The Dutch and City Hall Park in NYC, Found Chicago, The Hancock in Boston, and more. A lot of these boutique hotels are pretty charming.

Marriott Bonvoy® members can expect to earn and redeem points on stays at approximately 200 Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy properties later this year. Full integration with Marriott’s digital channels is expected in 2025.

Anthony’s Take: Marriott won’t stop growing. It’s amazing how many hotels are now options for Marriott Bonvoy® members and there is no end in sight. I look forward to exploring the Sonder properties.
