A retiring Spirit Airlines pilot received an unexpected and emotional send-off after the airline’s abrupt shutdown canceled what was supposed to be his final flight, but not from the airline that employed him.
Captain Jon Jackson had planned to complete his career with one last trip into Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). Instead, Spirit ceased operations at 3 AM EST yesterday and ended its 34-year run while grounding its entire fleet overnight.
Jackson’s final scheduled flight never took off. This left him stranded as the airline shut down in the middle of the night following the collapse of a last-minute bailout effort. Spirit had been preparing for closure, canceling international flights ahead of time to avoid leaving passengers and crews stranded, and still carried more than 50,000 passengers in its final full day of operations. The shutdown ultimately left thousands of travelers affected with hundreds of flights canceled and more than 17,000 employees losing their jobs.
Determined to give his father a proper farewell, Jackson’s son Chris, a first officer at Southwest, helped arrange an alternative. The two traveled together aboard a Southwest Airlines flight from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and turned a disappointing ending into a meaningful moment shared between father and son.
Upon arrival at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), airport crews coordinated a traditional water cannon salute with fire trucks spraying arcs of water over the aircraft as it taxied in. When Jackson stepped into the terminal, he was met with applause from airline staff and travelers to mark a heartfelt conclusion to his career.
Southwest posted the full story on social media.
Anthony’s Take: This was so nice of the son and Southwest for giving this man the sendoff he deserved. It’s sad to think Spirit is gone as I was a fan and found that the airline served a need and consistently delivered, but at least there is one positive story in all of the coverage.
