We spent a few days in Malta before heading onward to Sicily. Delta Air Lines started flying nonstop between New York John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Malta International Airport (MLA). I lucked out and found seats in Delta One® for only 83,300 miles each during a flash sale. The Hyatt Regency Malta was a short ride from the airport and served as a good base for relaxing and exploring the area.

Anthony’s Take: I knew that we would be landing at 8:00 AM and wanted to make sure our suite was ready. I booked the night before so that we would not have to wait when we arrived in the morning and was quite annoyed when we got to the hotel and found the cleaning staff in the suite. Other than that hiccup, the rest of the stay was great with the staff friendly and helpful. The hotel has some good amenities and offers an easy walking distance to a lot of dining, shopping, and more.

Hyatt Regency Malta Booking

Booking

I booked a Regency Suite with 1 King Bed with Pjazza View and Balcony using World of Hyatt® points. I made the reservation before the recent devaluation and was able to secure it for only 15,000 points per night. This would have cost around $445 per night and I thought the redemption was a good one. The hotel is a Category 3, so standard rooms range between 8,000 and 20,000 per night and Standard Suites (like the one I booked) now costing between 16,000 and 28,000 points per night.

Transportation to/from the Hotel

We took an Uber Black from Malta International Airport (MLA). It cost around $23 and only took 15 minutes for the almost seven-mile ride. When departing Malta, we took another Uber Black to the airport. It took around the same amount of time and was at a similar cost.

Location

The Hyatt Regency Malta is located on the grounds of a former, late-1920s Augustinian priory. It’s in the middle of St. Julian’s and offers easy access to the casino, beach, restaurants, shops, and more.

It’s pretty cool to have the historical building on site (even though it doesn’t really feel incorporated into the hotel).

Hyatt Regency Malta 6

The courtyard offered lots of seating and there was even more in the lobby.

Check-in

Reception was located on the back wall when entering the lobby. There were several desks with agents to assist. As mentioned, I booked a suite for the night before so that it would be ready when I arrived. The agent checking me in mentioned that there was a Regency Club lounge, but that breakfast was served in the restaurant and that evening cocktails and appetizers would be in the courtyard. The lounge provides water and coffee throughout the day. I requested a 4:00 PM checkout, which was granted. The suite I booked is what we got with no further upgrades available. Our keys were printed and we were off to the suite a moment later.

Hyatt Regency Malta 9

Elevators were around the corner.

The elevator lobby and hallways on my floor were clean and in good repair.

Hyatt Regency Malta 13

Regency Suite with 1 King Bed with Pjazza View and Balcony (119)

There are 151 guest rooms and suites at the Hyatt Regency Malta. I requested a higher floor, but was told that this was all that was available.

Hyatt Regency Malta 14

The suite opened into the bedroom.

Hyatt Regency Malta 15

A balcony was to the left. It held two chairs.

Hyatt Regency Malta 16

The bedroom offered a king-sized bed, two nightstands, an ottoman, and a TV.

Hyatt Regency Malta 17

The TV was mounted across from the bed.

Hyatt Regency Malta 18

The other half of the space was a living room. It held a small couch and a table.

Hyatt Regency Malta 19

A desk and chair were on the opposite wall.

Hyatt Regency Malta 20

A closet area divided the bedroom and living room. It offered space for luggage, an iron and ironing board, a safe, a refrigerator, a tea kettle, a Nespresso machine, coffee, condiments, cups, and water.

Hyatt Regency Malta 21

Filtered water, glasses, a Nespresso machine, and a tea kettle were on a shelf.

Hyatt Regency Malta 22

A drawer held coffee pods, condiments, tea, cups, and more.

Hyatt Regency Malta 23

The refrigerator was empty for guest use.

Hyatt Regency Malta 24

An iron and ironing board were in the corner closet.

Hyatt Regency Malta 25

A safe was found in a drawer.

Hyatt Regency Malta 26

Even with the cleaners in the room when we arrived, there was a big clump of hair on the floor.

Hyatt Regency Malta 27

The bathroom was across from the closet area. It held a toilet, glassed-in shower, and vanity with a single sink.

Hyatt Regency Malta 29

The vanity had limited counter space.

Hyatt Regency Malta 30

Hyatt Regency Malta 31

A bar of Pharmacopia brand soap was on the counter and a bottle of lotion was mounted to the wall. I liked that there was a live plant in the bathroom.

Hyatt Regency Malta 34

Some other amenities were on the other side of the sink.

Hyatt Regency Malta 28

The shower was a standard size. Water pressure and temperature were both fine.

Hyatt Regency Malta 32

More toiletries were mounted to the wall of the shower.

Hyatt Regency Malta 33

The toilet was spaced well away from the shower.

Hyatt Regency Malta 34

Regency Club

The Regency Club at this hotel is little more than an extra space to relax or work in. It offered coffee and water throughout the day.

Evening Cocktail Hour

The lobby restaurant was set up with some food for cocktail hour. Meats, cheeses, salads, sandwiches, and some desserts were offered. This was open to Globalists and those who booked rooms with Regency Club access. Servers were in the courtyard with beverages.

We had some wine in the courtyard.

Public Areas & Amenities

The Hyatt Regency Malta offers the Regency Club, a restaurant in the lobby and another on the roof, an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a spa, a fitness center, a mini market, and event space.

Hyatt Regency Malta 65

Hyatt Regency Malta 60

The pool is on the roof and offers great views.

Hyatt Regency Malta 61

I wanted to make sure that we had space in the shade, so I booked a cabana in advance. These are not marked reserved and guests seem to use them freely, but if you have one booked they will move others for you. This was offered for 50% off the regular price and I did not mind spending €45 per day (especially since it included a daily €25 food and beverage credit). It says per person, but the hotel clarified that it is €25 per day.

Hyatt Regency Malta 62

The cabana did a good job of keeping us out of the scorching sun.

Hyatt Regency Malta 63

I loved the views.

Hyatt Regency Malta 64

My husband loved the cocktails.

Hyatt Regency Malta 66

Hyatt Regency Malta 67

The rooftop restaurant and bar known as “Seed Rooftop” led to the pool.

Hyatt Regency Malta 68

Filtered water dispensers were throughout the hotel.

Hyatt Regency Malta 69

The mini market was near the lobby elevators.

Hyatt Regency Malta 70

The bar in the lobby opened into the restaurant.

Hyatt Regency Malta 71

The fitness center was on the smaller side.

Hyatt Regency Malta 72

It offered a limited amount of equipment.

Hyatt Regency Malta 73

Towels and fresh fruit were on offer.

Hyatt Regency Malta 74

The spa is located in the same space.

Hyatt Regency Malta 75

Hyatt Regency Malta 76

A sauna and ice room were open to all guests.

Hyatt Regency Malta 77

The indoor pool was also here.

Hyatt Regency Malta 78

A concierge desk was in the lobby, but it was not always staffed.

Hyatt Regency Malta 80

Overall Impression:

I was happy with the hotel for this trip. The staff was friendly, the suite was comfortable, and the hotel offers a good number of amenities as well as a convenient location. I’d return to this property when back in Malta.
