Delta Air Lines made some recent schedule adjustments and flights between Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and Stuttgart Airport (STR) have been cut. Delta was the only carrier flying nonstop between the German city and the United States.

Flights to/from Stuttgart Airport (STR) were running year-round, 3x weekly with a Boeing 767-300ER. Delta had already announced that it was shifting the service to seasonal and that there would be no flights this coming winter. Now, it’s cancelled entirely after October 26th.

Stuttgart Airport (STR) is the latest smaller German city to see nonstop service to/from the United States not have the demand to keep it on the map. Last year, Delta cut flights to Düsseldorf Airport (DUS). It was the only airline flying nonstop since United Airlines ceased flying to Düsseldorf from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) back in 2014 (this was a route operated with a Boeing 757-200). Lufthansa also used to fly nonstop from both Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).

Delta will continue to fly to Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (BER), Frankfurt Airport (FRA), and Munich Airport Franz Josef Strauss (MUC) to/from the United States. German trains are fast and convenient. It’s easy to reach other cities with a quick train ride on the Deutsche Bahn.

Anthony’s Take: I never flew the Delta flights to Stuttgart or Düsseldorf, but I did take the United flight many years ago. This latest cut is not surprising as it was never a leisure destination and business travel has not recovered to prepandemic levels.

Love DUS and it’s a great alternative to FRA. Wished UA would fly there again.
