A Boston doctor was arrested on a recent Hawaiian Airlines flight for allegedly exposing himself and masturbating in front of a 14-year-old girl. A criminal complaint has charged him with “lewd, indecent and obscene acts while in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States.” This carries a penalty of up to 90 days in prison, up to one year of supervised release, and up to a $5,000 fine.

The New York Post is reporting that Dr. Sudipta Mohanty, 33, of Cambridge was arrested on Thursday related to an incident that happened on a flight from May 2022. Mohanty was flying from Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) on Hawaiian Airlines flight HA90. According to the charging documents, he was seated next to a 14-year-old girl who was traveling with her grandparents.

Mohanty allegedly used a blanket to cover himself up to his neck while he bounced his leg up and down. The teenager then allegedly observed the blanket on the floor while Mohanty was openly masturbating. When Monhanty went to the lavatory, she quickly moved to an open seat (luckily this was an option) and told her family what happened after arriving in Boston. Law enforcement was also called.

Acting United States Attorney, Joshua S. Levy, is quoted in a news release:

“Everyone, especially children, has the absolute right to not be exposed to lewd conduct when they are traveling. If you engage in the type of illicit behavior alleged here, you will be caught and held accountable wherever it happens.”

Anthony’s Take: Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. I’m not sure why it took over a year for an arrest and charges to be filed, but no one should have to be made feel uncomfortable or intimidated (especially children).

I wouldn’t say that this sexual predator is being held accountable when… “ This carries a penalty of up to 90 days in prison, up to one year of supervised release, and up to a $5,000 fine.” This is why they will do these things openly on an aircraft next a minor child – they know they won’t be punished and they will simply continue this behavior and it will escalate.

If this person is convicted, he will lose more than a decade of his life and $5 million. If the teen sues, she could get in the low $millions.

(Decade equals his medic training with no or minimal salary, $5 million is from student debt and loss of $250k salary x 20 years).

I suspect the case was difficult to prove hence the one year time until arrest. Were there witnesses? Was the man on Ambien which can cause sleep walking even sleep driving in rare cases? Man with any prior history? Immigrant?
