Avelo Airlines is a low-cost carrier that launched in 2021. The airline operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft and serves destinations across the United States. Avelo competes with Spirit Airways, Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines. The carrier flies within the United States with the exception of some public charter flights from Capital Region International Airport (LAN) in Lansing, MI that it operates in partnership with Apple Vacations. Now, Avelo wants to add a few international destinations to its route network.

Avelo applied last week for authorization to fly to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Exact destinations and start dates were not provided other than it having a 2024 target. New flights from Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU) or Orlando International Airport (MCO) would make sense based on the flight length and the Federal Inspection Stations needed.

Anthony’s Take: Avelo must be seeing success in its charter operation and its competitors all serve the Caribbean/Central America already. We’ll wait and see what comes in the form of government approval and routes actually added.

They have expanded like crazy in New Haven and the area has a large Dominican population but the customs clearance would be something new they would need to add.
