Hawaiian Airlines is rolling out a change to its onboard dining experience with the introduction of chef-curated pre-order meals, new local snacks, and enhanced service across all cabins as part of a broader effort to deepen its signature Hawaii-inspired hospitality.

Chef Sheldon Hawaiian

Beginning July 1st, passengers flying in Main Cabin on most routes between Hawaii and the US mainland will be able to purchase fresh pre-ordered meals created in partnership with acclaimed Maui chef Sheldon Simeon, a James Beard Award finalist known for his popular restaurants Tin Roof and Tiffany’s.

The new menu is designed to bring authentic island flavors onboard with dishes inspired by local comfort foods and Hawaii’s multicultural culinary traditions. Featured meals include crispy mochiko chicken with garlic noodles, barbecue teriyaki chicken bento and corned beef hash with eggs. Many dishes also incorporate signature flavors from Simeon’s restaurants including his K mayo, teriyaki sauce, banana bread syrup, and furikake rice cracker toppings.

According to Hawaiian Airlines, meals will be prepared using fresh local ingredients and made no more than 12 hours before departure. The launch marks a significant expansion of Hawaiian’s pre-order dining model, which was previously focused primarily on premium cabins. Through the airline’s app and website, passengers can now select meals up to two weeks before departure or as late as 20 hours before their flight (including plant-based and gluten-free options).

The airline says the Main Cabin dining program will initially launch with a limited curated menu before expanding further this fall with rotating seasonal dishes and additional chef collaborations. Hawaiian has also strengthened its premium culinary program with the recent appointment of Dell Valdez as executive chef overseeing domestic First Class and international Business Class menus.

Hawaiian Snacks

Alongside the upgraded meals, Hawaiian is introducing a range of new complimentary snacks and local products throughout the cabin experience. Passengers will continue receiving welcome beverages and pre-arrival sweet treats from local brands such as Hawaiian Host and Honolulu Cookie Company.

New onboard snack partners include Anahola Granola and Diamond Bakery. Premium Class travelers will receive tropical granola bars featuring papaya and pineapple flavors, while Main Cabin passengers can enjoy Hawaiian shortbread macadamia nut cookies and Maui onion kettle chips depending on flight time. The new dining program also supports Hawaiian Airlines’ environmental goals by reducing food waste through pre-ordering and increasing the use of compostable and recyclable packaging materials.

As part of the rollout, Hawaii residents enrolled in the airline’s Huakai by Hawaiian membership program by June 24th will receive a one-time launch promotion offering their first two pre-ordered menu items free beginning July 1st.

Alisa Onishi

Managing Director of Hawaii Marketing at Hawaiian Airlines, said:

At Hawaiian Airlines, food has always been a core expression of our Hawaiian hospitality — our special way of welcoming guests onboard and inviting them into our island home. We designed our new Main Cabin meal program based on guest preference for more control and choice, while allowing us to deliver food that better reflects the richness of Hawaiʻi’s culinary traditions. By moving to a pre-order model, we’re expanding beyond a single standard meal to offer a broader menu that reflects how our guests want to dine today.”

Anthony’s Take: For Hawaiian Airlines, the expanded dining initiative represents another step in modernizing the passenger experience while staying rooted in the airline’s award-winning “Mea Hoʻokipa” hospitality tradition (a service philosophy centered on warmth, generosity and the spirit of Hawaii).
