Winter weather continues to cripple operations at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) as delays and cancellations have now entered their fifth consecutive day with today (once again) looking to worsen. The airport has already cancelled more than 400 flights today (January 5th) with this number expected to rise as the day progresses. Other European airports are seeing delays and some cancellations, but nothing on the scale of what is happening at the Dutch airport.

The numbers are piling up already with more than 415 flights (34% of the schedule cancelled). This is expected to continue to climb and will likely reach 50% to 60% of flights cancelled for the day. As the operational meltdown is now in its fifth day, KLM and other airlines are still struggling to accommodate passengers on other flights or with hotel rooms. The number of cancelled flights has been pretty bleak each day over the past few days with:

  • 385 or 31% of flights cancelled on Saturday, January 3rd
  • 568 or 43% of flights cancelled on Sunday, January 4th
  • 726 or 53% of flights cancelled Monday, January 5th
  • 415 or 34% of flights cancelled today, January 6th

Altogether, more than 2,094 flights have been cancelled so far.

The pain is also being felt in Paris with hundreds of flights cancelled, buses suspended, and more than 621 miles of traffic jams in the greater Paris area.

Airport employees are still struggling to get things in order and some humorously stopped to have a snowball fight.

Anthony’s Take: KLM’s hub and one of Europe’s largest airports is still trying to dig out from the snow and struggling with operations. This looks like it’s going to be several days before any sense of normalcy returns.
