If you’re flying this Labor Day weekend, you’ll have plenty of company filling up airports across the country. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is forecasting one of the busiest travel weekends in history with millions of passengers expected to pass through airport security checkpoints.

TSA Labor Day

According to TSA projections, 17.4 million travelers are expected to be screened from August 28th through September 3rd. The single busiest day is anticipated to be Friday, August 29th (when roughly three million passengers are expected to flood airports). This surge is fueled by families taking advantage of the holiday weekend before many children go back to school (especially in the Northeast).

While the TSA says it’s prepared for the crowds, travelers can take a few steps to make security less stressful:

  • TSA PreCheck®: Expedited lanes at more than 200 airports. You can keep your shoes on and your laptop in your bag as you go through this lane.
  • Have the Right ID: Use a REAL ID or another TSA-approved form of identification like a passport.
  • Pack Light: Follow 3-1-1 rules and don’t bring things that are forbidden through checkpoints (like knives, large liquids, etc.)
  • Arrive Early: Give yourself at least three hours before departure (particularly for international flights or if you don’t have CLEAR Plus or TSA PreCheck®) to allow for crowds and other delays.
  • Be Patient: The airline employees and TSA agents are doing their jobs and they have to deal with tons of passengers who travel infrequently. Show some kindness.

Anthony’s Take: I am flying all week for work and to Tampa International Airport (TPA) for the weekend. I’m hoping the lines aren’t too crazy and am happy I have expedited options.
