Silver Airways is a regional airline headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, FL. They fly to the Caribbean and to a handful of cities in the southeast. I’ve flown them to San Juan, Great Exuma, and St. Kitts. Flights are quick and the service is generally good. I live in Tampa, FL during the winter and Silver Airways currently has eight routes served from there in the Southeast (plus Nassau in The Bahamas). Now, they’re adding one more and an additional flight from Fort Lauderdale.

The airline just announced two new routes:

  • Fort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) to Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV)
  • Tampa International Airport (TPA) to Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO)

Silver Airways last flew to Gainesville Regional Airport (GNV) in 2015 and service to Greensboro’s Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) is totally new. The Gainesville flights will operate daily starting on August 21st and the Greensboro flights will be once weekly on Saturdays beginning on September 2nd.

Anthony’s Take: I hope Silver Airways keeps adding to its Tampa schedule. More Caribbean destinations from Tampa would be especially great.

I will be curious to see when/if the routes actually begin. I had tickets on the first GSO-BNA flight (another new route, supposed to start over a month ago, still hasn’t). I got an email saying my flight was canceled. I contact Silver and they advised I will be rebooked or get a refund, so stand by. Two weeks go by and nothing. I see the start date was moved back, I moved my flight myself. I then see a week later, with no notice from Silver, that they pushed back the start date again. I finally just refunded. Calling Silver involved waiting on the phone 3.5 hours to be told that they have no information.

Same airline that announced service to PIE (St Pete) from FLL. I went to FLL with my booking, checked in, and noticed that the boarding pass said Tampa (counter agent said nothing). Get to gate and see the flight number is same as ticket but it says Tampa. Agent said oh, we couldn’t start up St Pete so all the flights will just go to Tampa. Well, would have been nice to know more than an hour before departure when rental car and other arrangements need to be changed.

Tl/dr: I don’t trust Silver service announcements or dates until an airplane actually completes a flight.

Service is relatively good is an overstatement of huge proportions – departures and arrivals are merely a “guide”, the equipment is so old that it randomly is able to fly and customer service if you have a problem is non-existent. It should only be your last resort before walking.
