Next week, Avelo Airlines is adding service to a central Florida airport that has not seen passenger service in more than 10 years. Lakeland Linder International Airport (LAL) is a 35-minute drive from me in Tampa and I’ll be on the first flight out and headed to Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN).

I’m always excited for an inaugural and even more so for this one since I have never flown Avelo Airlines or from this airport (or to New Haven for that matter). I’m taking the flight just for the purpose of the fun of doing it and will be back home that night.  New flights to/from Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport (HVN) will run 2x weekly (on Thursdays and Saturdays).

Defunct airline, Direct Air flew Boeing 737s to/from Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), Niagara Falls International Airport (IAG), and Niagara Falls International Airport (SPI) in Springfield, IL. It ceased operations in 2012. The airport has been home to the southeast regional air cargo hub for Amazon Air since July 2020.

If you’re not familiar with them, Avelo Airlines is a low-cost carrier that launched in 2021. The airline operates a fleet of modern Boeing 737 aircraft and serves destinations across the United States. Avelo competes with Spirit Airways, Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines, and Sun Country Airlines.

Avelo Airlines Chairman and CEO, Andrew Levy, said:

We’re proud to be the only airline serving LAL and are excited to introduce Lakeland to Avelo’s low fares, travel-friendly convenience, and industry-leading reliability. Getting to Southern Connecticut – the gateway to New England and New York – is now easier than ever.”

Anthony’s Take: I’m psyched to take this flight and will be reporting back on the experience and the flight itself next week.

Very cool. I’m in the bulkhead (where else?) 🙂

I’m in row 2 (if you’re in bulkhead, hope it’s the DEF side… some of their planes don’t have one at ABC so it’s footsie with the flight attendants).

I’ll be on the first flight in from HVN, hopefully we land on runway 28 as the approach will give an interesting view. Perhaps there will be a water cannon salute as well! I live minutes away from the airport so I will go watch the departure afterwards.
