Hilton Hotels and Tesla have signed an expanded agreement to install up to 20,000 Tesla Universal Wall Connectors at 2,000 hotels in the US, Canada, and Mexico. This will make Hilton’s planned electric vehicle charging network the largest of any hospitality company.

Each participating hotel will have at least six chargers. Hilton hopes that this will make the hotelier the first choice for travelers with electric vehicles. Tesla recently launched its Universal Wall Connector. The device is designed to charge any North American vehicle model, which expands Tesla’s efforts to make charging accessible to all EVs.

I see a couple of big problems here:

With the rapid increase in the number of electric cars on the road they’ll need a much larger number of chargers per hotel.

Since every carmaker is pushing hard to get more EV’s on the road, most will not be able to use these charging stations. Most cars will not be a Tesla. What are the majority who drive GM/Honda/other supposed to do?

Since the battery needs a while to recharge after you go 250 miles or so, sounds like a great hotel strategy – you’re forced to stop, might as well stay the night. And if you really need to get somewhere, then you fly.
