Copa Airlines flight CM204 between Brasília-President Juscelino Kubitschek International Airport (BSB) and Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport (PTY) turned violent when a passenger grabbed a knife from a meal tray and attempted to take a flight attendant hostage. He headed toward the emergency door and attempted to open it. This was thwarted by other passengers who beat and subdued the man.

The dramatic incident occurred on November 5th and passengers sprung to action to make sure that the man could do no further harm. Cristiano Carvalho, 51, recorded the chaotic scene as he witnessed it while being a passenger on the flight. He told The New York Post:

A flight attendant started screaming, and another tried to hold him back, but couldn’t because he was too strong. He went past the back emergency door after the warning. Then he started moving forward and trying to open it. They beat him a lot until he almost lost consciousness.”

Aircraft pressurization makes it impossible to open an emergency exit at cruising altitude. Nonetheless, it was good that passengers got involved and handled the man until Panamanian authorities could handle him upon arrival.

Anthony’s Take: This had to be terrifying for the flight attendant and other passengers. I’m glad they were able to subdue him.
